Ruing gifted Blackburn chances

Pompey slipped to a second successive defeat when the loss at Doncaster, on Tuesday, was followed up with another setback at Blackburn.

In poor conditions, which cannot be used as an excuse as both sides had to play in this at Ewood Park, Blackburn ran out comfortable 3-0 winners on Saturday – the home side could even afford the luxury of having a man sent off before adding another goal.

Blackburn’s lead eventually came late in the first half when Bradley Dack scored.

Danny Graham extended Blackburn’s lead shortly before the hour mark, putting the game beyond Pompey’s reach, before Dominic Samuel was sent off three minutes from time for kicking out at Christian Burgess.

A man light or not, Blackburn added a third in the last minute through Craig Conway.

Kenny Jackett felt it was a case of Pompey making more mistakes than the home side, who looked ‘more solid’ than the Blues.

He was quoted by the News: ‘Blackburn made less mistakes than us. I felt they looked more solid – and more solid at the back. Up to the first goal there was one clearcut chance at either end.’

A ‘real poor mistake’ gifted Blackburn the first goal with Jackett going on to say Rovers didn’t have to work particularly hard to create their chances, whereas Pompey did.

‘Then we’ve made a real poor mistake to give them the goal,’ added Jackett.

‘Blackburn never made those kind of mistakes. We had to work hard to earn our chances – and for us there was too many times we gifted them chances.’

I couldn’t follow the game personally, and unlike some of my Devon Blues mates, who I suspect will be worse for wear today, I wasn’t at Ewood Park, so cannot really offer up much comment… I’ll leave that to you guys.
