…ok it might have ‘only’ been in the reserves but it was a goal nonetheless and this should help boost his confidence as he looks to stake a claim or a cup final place.

Dave Nugent scored his first Pompey goal at any level for the reserves last night in the draw with Reading. That was his first goal at any level since his winner in the 3rd round of the FA cup against Ipswich and as he told The News is was long overdue: ‘I was due a goal, I’ve not played many games this season so it was nice to on this occasion.

‘My right foot is stronger. My left is just for standing on really but when I swing it sometimes it goes in and sometimes it goes into the crowd.

‘It’s massive for my confidence.

‘I should have actually scored a few more. I missed a couple of chances, but you’ve got to be there to miss them.

‘I thought I worked hard up there on my own again and I enjoyed it.

‘It’s now down to me to keep playing and getting match fitness to change the gaffer’s mind in the forthcoming weeks for the FA Cup final’.

I did not see Nugent, but it is said that he ‘looked lively as the lone striker’, can anyone verify this?

It is still almost 100% certain that Kanu will be the man that gets to lead the line, if of course we go with the lone striker, but if Nugent keeps plugging away then you never know? either way he will almost certainly be a part of the squad that takes part in the final, even if he does not start.

I think that it is very important for Nugent and Milan Baros to get as much time on the pitch in the final 3 games as possible as match sharpness needs to be build up – we cannot ‘risk’ maybe ‘needing’ to throw them in cold for the cup final.
