Campbell looking for extended run

Sol Campbell has told The News how he is back to stay with England, he does not want the Russia performance, which gained him much acclaim to be a flash in the pan: ‘My performance was right up there.

‘Not many people cannot play for their country for a long time and come back and play like they have never been away.

‘I want to be part of it for as long as possible’.

Basically written off by England – be honest fellas even some of us had! – his undoubted faith in his own ability, highlighted by what he has said has got him back into contention.

With Rio Ferdinand suspended for the Croatia match Campbell is a near certain starter in his place – fitness permitting, where he should come up against Pompey teammate Niko Kranjcar.

This could be viewed as a last hurrah, but he has made it clear he is here to stay – so if he maintains his current form he will certainly do just that.

From an England point of view you want the youngsters, the next generation to come through but you cannot doubt the benefits of his experience to England can you and the obvious quality he has too, which will transfer to others, such as Joleon Lescott.

Clearly the priority for us is having Campbell play for Pompey, but the longer he can play for England too the more we will benefit – Pompey players in the England set-up will catch even more peoples eyes, which will then benefit our chances of others not only getting in as well but also those already within the set-up wanting to joining us – without fear of ‘losing their place as they play for Pompey’…
