The draw for the group stage of this season’s UEFA Cup will take place at UEFA Headquarters in Geneva on Tuesday 7th October at 11.00 BST. There are 40 teams left in the competition and they are allocated into eight groups of five teams. Each team will then play the others in their group either home or away. The top three teams from each group will then proceed to the knock-out stages with the eight third place teams from the Champions League groups.

Teams are allocated to one of five pots based on their UEFA rankings – Pompey are in Pot #4 – and the draw will consist of one team from each Pot being placed into each group. Teams cannot however be drawn with clubs from their own country.

A look at the pots show the strength of this years competition with Standard Liege who eliminated Everton down on Pot 5! Whatever the draw, we are in for some mouth watering games between now and Christmas.

Pot 1

Benfica
CSKA Moscow
Hamburg
AC Milan
Seville
Valencia
Schalke 04
Tottenham Hotspur

Pot 2

Ajax
Stuttgart
Olympiacos
Deportivo
Club Brugge
Spartak Moscow
Paris Saint-Germain
Heerenveen

Pot 3

Rosenburg
Udinese
Feyenoord
Braga
Slavia Prague
Manchester City
Galatasaray
Sampdoria

Pot 4

Pompey
Hertha Berlin
Partizan
Nancy
Aston Villa
Racing Santander
Copenhagen
Dinamo Zagreb

Pot 5

Saint Etienne
Wolfsburg
Standard Liege
Twente (Holland)
NEC (Holland)
Metalist Kharkiv (Ukraine)
Lech Poznan (Poland)
Zilina – (Slovakia)

I can see there will be some groups of death about with those names but qualification is simple IF you win your two home games.

Fancy another trip to Portugal with Benfica or Braga both in different pots? Two decent trips from Pompey are not possible as Nancy and Santander are both in the same pot. What do we think lads and lassies?
