My week old nephew endured his first Pompey experience on Saturday afternoon – he will now have to get used to the frustrations like that being a Pompey fan.
Clearly at such a young age he was not able to really watch the game as such, but he did give the players and my brother and I a few looks as if to say ‘here we go again!’
At the time of reading this, having been away I have not seen any comments on Vital Pompey, but my own thinking of the game was that overall we played fairly well, particularly in the 2nd half and contrary to what Rafa Benitez might think we did fashion enough ‘clear cut’ chances ‘in open play’ to have won, which we should have given the goldenness of these opportunities.
Did you not just have that feeling that Kanu would miss when he stepped to take the penalty? Credit where due to Jose Reina who saved well but it was a poor penalty and I never for one moment had belief that he would score, why someone else did not take it I still do not know. After that penalty miss that is when I got that feeling it would be ‘one of those days’, with the subsequent missed chances proving so.
Papa Bouba Diop had a really good game, so more of that and he will be a firm fans favourite, although that midfield lacked creativity to be used too often, in my opinion.
It has its moments but once again on the whole I think that Harry Redknapp’s new 4-3-3 formation just does not bring the best out of John Utaka and Benjani, with Benjani in particular almost wasted, a slight alteration during the match and things looked better.
So, a new Pompey supporters lifetime starts in frustrating fashion, but it is something that the little man will get used to in time, we – him included! – would have taken a point before the games if honest, but after it we were left bitterly disappointed not to have taken all 3.
