Refreshing but do I feel pity?

It is a hard life being a footballer isn’t it?

You train a couple of hours a day, maybe not even everyday, and then play once, sometimes twice a week and all for – in most instances – more in this week, even at the lower end of the scale, than most of us in a year!

Add to this the fact that the majority also get paid up to 2-months wages quite literally for doing nothing during the off-season…

Whilst Ibrahima Sonko seems like one of footballs genuine ‘nice guys’ am I being unkind in saying I have little sympathy for him that he has shared thoughts of disappointment and frustration at playing little in the past 3-years for his mighty salary?

£20,000 p/w, £14,000 of which Pompey paid him last season to spend the majority of this sat in the stands doing nothing, is something that he has said he felt bad about doing. Sonko’s views are somewhat ‘refreshing’ yet he took the money all the same…

Do not get me wrong if clubs are going to throw this money around these players will accept it and hardly any will say ‘ok, I am not earning this so lets call it a day!’

Sonko, as nice a fella as he seems, is not a very good footballer when all is said and done and ‘footballing rules’ or not I do not think he would have been involved at many clubs as much as he might have wanted. If he ends up getting a new club this summer and picks up ΒΌ of what he is currently on he will do well. He is not short of a bob or two mind so I suspect he can afford this cut.

Nice guy perhaps, get angry with him for what he got paid without earning it at Fratton – on the whole – I will not but I will also show him no pit, in spite of a somewhat refreshing attitude to his situation, at his ‘horror’ 3-years. Why should I…
