The dreaded ‘clause’ has cost PFC so much over the years.
Countless millions have been lost due to payments made as a result of the club, or should that be Storrieteller, inserting ‘sell-on fees’ into contract agreements with other clubs when we signed players – usually resulting in us parting with 10%, at least, of their future fees when we sold then yet how many have we then sold on doing the same! When these sell-on fees were taken into account, fees received after the massive wages we had paid them during their time at Fratton, deals were never really as ‘attractive’ as they seemed…
Another of the ‘clause’ favourites would often see the players the beneficiary with new contracts and bonuses of unheard of proportions coming their way.
A rare instance of PFC actually benefiting from such a fantastic clause, from the clubs viewpoint anyway, looks to have been lost!?
It has come to light this weekend that Bournemouth would have been needing to give us 50% of the transfer fee that they received from the sale of Jason Pearce.
As a result a proposed move to Bournemouth from the former Pompey youngster looks as though it will fall through…
An unexpected cash windfall seems as though it will pass us by and to be honest can you blame The Cherries board for having serious reservations about selling him now seen as they will have to part with so much, that said ‘if’ the price is right I would ‘think’ that they still will?
They are left in a very difficult position now because a talented footballer, being possibly denied the chance to play at a higher level due to such a clause, could be left an ‘unhappy footballer’, and these are a very dislikeable breed more often than not, for the remainder of his contract?
Do they bite the bullet and keep him regardless until his contract ends or cave and sell him and lose out on 50% of what they thought they will get. Whatever happens will it be seen as being more beneficial to them to keep him until the end of his contract and get all of nothing or sell him now and get half of something?
Whilst I do feel for Bournemouth, as we have been there, I suspect that there is every chance that Pompey will be coming into an unexpected cash amount at some point in the not too distant future thanks to Jason Pearce, well more to the point those that negotiated his transfer from Fratton – for once, possible, in our favour and very much at someone else’s, sadly a respected neighbours, disadvantage…
