Pompey’s biggest asset

The role the Pompey fans play has often been highlighted and the part the 12th man played in Saturday’s victory over MK Dons has been lauded by Kenny Jackett.

Finally the Blues were able to secure back-to-back League One victories when a 2-0 win was secured over MK Dons thanks to Oli Hawkins’ brace – as he returned to his more familiar position as a striker.

He opened the scoring early in the first half when turning in Matt Kennedy’s cross from close range. MK Dons had a chance to equalise shortly before half time when Christian Burgess’ slip – as he returned from injury – let in Osman Slow but Matt Clarke got back to cover.

Pompey punished that miss when Jamal Lowe set up Hawkins in added time.

A ‘very good team performance’ was praised by Jackett but he did think – when quoted by the News – the possession we had should have resulted in more attempts at goal.

‘It was a very good performance from my team. We played some good football in the first half. Having said that, I don’t think we got the amount of shots in we should have from the amount of the ball we had.’

Victory took the Blues to within touching distance of the play off places and if we’re to ‘become a force’ in League One the boss knows how important the fans’ part in achieving this could be.

Jackett said: ‘The game showed what an asset the crowd can be. I think they valued the different styles from first to second. They got right behind us and showed what an asset they can be as we look to become a force in this division.’
