An electrifying start as Pompey kick start the new season with an emphatic 3-0 win over Blackburn. This is followed by some stunning results including a brilliant 4-0 away win at the Riverside. By the end of this month we are riding high in 2nd spot.
September
2 more wins on the bounce and Pompey are top of the Premiership after 5 games, and without conceding a goal. In fact the first goal scored against us in the league comes on the 25th September when Bolton steal the 3 points at Fratton. This costs us dearly and we finish the month in 4th.
October
London clubs Tottenham and Chelsea both defeat us, but there are wins against West Ham and Reading to keep us in the top 4. Newcastle boots us out of the Carling Cup in what is a poor Portsmouth performance. Position retained at 4th.
November
November proves to be a very moderate month with the only win coming at the hands of lowly Watford, and that thanks to a late LuaLua penalty. On a brighter note towards the end we defend well enough at Anfield to come away with a point. Ironically we move up to 3rd.
December
Xmas approaches and this is once again a very successful December for Pompey. In fact it is not until the 30th that we are actually beaten, again at the hands of Bolton. Earlier regulation wins occur over Everton and Sheffield Utd and an excellent 2-2 is gained at the Emirates against the high flying Arsenal when Pompey led 2-0. Unbelievably though we drop to 6th. Thanks again to Bolton.
January
The New Year did not bear much fruit; there were no wins in the Premier League at all, safe for a 2-1 defeat of Wigan in the FA Cup. Pompey failed to beat Middlesbrough, Sheffield Utd and Tottenham, and worse a Home defeat was suffered against Charlton. This prompting many fans to write off our European dream and wonder whether we were entering a crisis. The words ‘relegation battle’ were even used on some websites. Still 6th but slipping behind on points.
February
Another defeat on the road, this time at Wigan, opened up our February account poorly; however we were able to register our first league win in 2007 when accounting for Manchester City 2-1. Last season this triggered a revival, but after going down 3-0 to Blackburn it was clear that things were not so good. Many were glad that we had appeared to have gained sufficient points to retain Premiership status, whilst others were relatively despondent as the European dream was approaching an end. Position 8th.
March
In the first two games we failed to score, although following the Chelsea loss, a valuable point was gained in the 0-0 draw at Reading. Then we looked set to register a rare away win but Pearce denied us in injury time at Fulham and we had to settle for another draw (1-1). We were now at a crossroads. Improve and make a push for Euro claims, or settle for mid table mediocrity. Not that the latter was bad. Position 9th.
April
April and the Easter bunny arrives with a bang as we shoot down the Man United tall poppies 2-1. The game looked all over when Ferdinand kindly obliged but a late O`Shea goal and a great last ditch save from the ever sharp David James gave us our 3rd win in 4 attempts on home soil over the Red Devils. 48 Hours after knocking over the elite we succumb to cellar dweller Watford and the 4-2 defeat is hard to take. All is forgotten, however, when Newcastle and later Liverpool replicate United’s scoreline either side of a 0-0 at Villa Park. With 2 games remaining Pompey are on the fringe of Euro qualification. Position 8th.
May
Only 2 games in order to gain qualification, yet the first is a disaster when Pompey are belted 3-0 at Euro rivals Everton. Needing to beat Arsenal and relying on others not winning is the only possible scenario. Unfortunately Pompey can only draw with Arsenal in spite of the fact that their 2 rivals can only manage the same outcome. Pompey will rue the lost points in that tame defeat at wooden spoonists Watford in what overall had been a fantastic season for the Pompey faithful. Our highest finish in the Premier League had been attained. Final Position 9th.
