Pompey MotM at Oldham

|

Jack Whatmough’s performance was seen as the best one from a Pompey player against Oldham in last Saturday’s victory at Boundary Park.

Having been asked to vote – based on your experience of the game as a watching one at Oldham or listening on the radio – with 62% Whatmough got this well ahead of anyone else to win the Vital Pompey MotM poll.

What the poll asked – Oldham MotM

How you voted – Whatmough 62%
Ronan 10%
Pitman 10%
Donohue 6%
Lowe 3%
McGee 3%
Walkes 3%
Clarke 3%
Haunstrup 0%
Close 0%
Naismith 0%

On-loan Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan, who appears to be growing in stature as he looks to make his mark at Pompey, and the returning Brett Pitman – his brace of course secured this 2-0 win at Boundary Park – were Whatmough’s nearest challengers with 10% apiece.

Whatmough’s always been a footballer I’ve rated highly, the fact he’s made such an impressive return, albeit just the two games, from a third serious knee injury is very positive news going forward.

I thought he did well when making his competitive return against Gillingham – I didn’t see the game against Oldham but assuming the masses are correct about Whatmough’s showing in the win over the Latics is further cause for optimism.

Christian Burgess lost his place in Greater Manchester, he’ll be back in the fold at some point, but it’ll be interesting to see if Kenny Jackett retains a flat back four or opts to bring Burgess back to play alongside Whatmough and Matt Clarke again in a 3-5-2 formation at Fratton Park this weekend in the televised meeting with Oxford.
