Pompey in for Derby’s Giles Barnes?

Giles Barnes is the golden boy of Derby, he helped them to promotion to the promised land, but since then has struggled with injury – he was even injured during the play off semi final win over the Saints last season, but was still fit enough to see them off.

He has made his return recently, but despite fending off summer interest from West Ham he looks destined to leave Pride Park in January, but West Ham seem to have dropped out of the race?

Villa were strongly linked with him at the tail end of the weekend, with them reportedly now being joined by City and Pompey, so a battle to land the England U21 star is said to be ready to begin in the new year.

Barnes is a class act, and in his limited appearance in the top flight – added to that what I saw of him in the Championship – he does not look out of place but would he fit into the set up at Pompey though? Even with the African nations we still appear to have enough in midfield to cover this.

That said though another bright young English talent coming to Pompey would not be a bad thing would it, at 19 he has a good 15 years or so of his very best to offer yet doesn’t he…

As I say I am not so sure, I would not say no, but is midfield an area that we really need to look at that much in January – as talented as he is the reported £5m fee could be spent elsewhere strengthening the side couldn’t it?
