Pompey assessment – Notts County (a)

It, an away defeat, was always going to happen sooner or later, right?

Ideally it would have been later but to get to the end of October before losing at Notts County isn’t exactly bad is it!

In all honesty, as much as the results have been coming away from home – without wishing to sound too ‘negative’, as I’m not or unappreciative of the position we’re in – we’ve not always performed as well as the results away from Fratton, where we know we’ve ‘struggled’, have suggested have we to be honest?

I’m not going to say ‘papering over cracks’ but…

Don’t get me wrong we’ve ‘got the job done’ and cannot be too disappointed with our season to date but, and maybe I’m wrong, I’m not entirely convinced a defeat at Meadow Lane, as odd as it might sound, is ‘the worst thing’ to happen as it might give us the kick up the jacksie we need!

As I had problems with the Pompey Player initially, and it wasn’t until the final 5 or 10-minutes that I tried again to see it was back, I didn’t really follow the game at all so cannot offer up any opinion personally on it.

In which case I’ll leave it to Paul Cook as this is what, in this audio, he told ExpressFM.

I’ve got to say I again like his honest approach, which invariably he has shown BUT best of all I like the fact he wasn’t as abrasive in this interview as he has been, especially to the ExpressFM guys, of late when, at times, he’s actually been pretty rude if you ask me!

Answering the same questions over and over isn’t fun, although that is the life of a footie manager isn’t it. I felt he was ‘avoiding’ answering them in the past week or so, so I’m happy with this return approach with this more like the Cookie I’ve grown to know and like.

The FA cup with this something I always look forward to, for me, comes at the ‘right time’ as it means we can take a break, which is probably needed, from the league and with this a different competition – but one I would expect Cookie to be keener to win games in than he was the Paint Pot!

We should, and I suspect we will, see some changes in personnel with others given a chance and also, perhaps, a change in system to see if a fresh approach on that score can also work?

I fully understand and appreciate – in fact believe sticking to an approach and style is what a good manager will do, instead of (as Pompeytim recently, correctly, put it) ‘flip flopping’ all the time like others have – you play the way you wish to sometimes a different approach is needed if the one you’re taking isn’t quite working.

At least a change of personnel comes with some, perhaps, not delivering also having a chance to ‘take a break’ as well…

PLAY UP POMPEY!
