Playing down Eriksson ‘reports’

Much like Chix pointed out last night the ‘re-hashed’ and ‘re-used’ approach on most, if not all, that is being spouted at us all over the papers and t’internet is wearing a little thin now and I am getting tired with it really, if not annoyed.

In typical media fashion they take something, run with it, which of course means everyone else runs with it, but then when all get bored of that same thing they need ‘something else’, so they start ‘analysing quotes’ trying to dig deeper and deeper into their meaning, or focusing fully on one aspect of a quote, often taking a ‘suggestion’ as a ‘given’, then run at the same thing, giving it what they think is a fresh angle, when actually it is not…

The Sven Goran Eriksson situation for example.

His agent, Athole Still, comes out with things saying that he ‘could/would’ be ‘interested in the job’ and as such could/would talk to us. After running with this it suddenly becomes a given that he ‘wants the job’, which then undergoes a transformation into ‘he has/will’ be offered the job – a ‘simple’, if not ‘harmless’ set of quotes changes into whatever it is wanted to be by those using them.

So, to put it simple, his agent is doing what agents do – putting him in the shop window, this is no doubt done with some genuine interest of him taking the post, but also I have no doubt to ‘remind’ others of his availability and ‘warn’ them that if they do not move quickly then he ‘could’ go elsewhere. We ‘might’ have him in mind but until our takeover deal is 100% complete, signed, sealed and rubber stamped nothing can happen – and I feel this could take some time, so be prepared for this to drag out in ‘typical Pompey fashion’.

All of this said, I would not be at all surprised to see the Swede pitch up at Fratton next season despite Peter Storrie playing this down…

The ‘it’s a complete nonsense’ approach has been taken and in an attempt to ‘cool’ things and clam ‘expectations’ he also said: ‘I don’t see great changes at this time, but obviously that is a decision for them at that moment.

‘The suggestion that we are in discussions with Sven-Goran Eriksson and other things I think comes from agents.’

The ‘slight implication’ that no change of manager will be made at all is also given, but then again that is only a slight implication and that depends on which way you view it… I guess I too would then be ‘analysing’ these thoughts!

As I have said before I go back and forth on my feelings for Storrie, of course something being said to keep things in order needed to be said as did something to cool speculation, but sometimes less is more and maybe saying nothing, or at least little is the best way to go – that ‘might’ be one of the things that gets peoples backs up with him sometimes?

Would simply ‘denying’ the rumours and/or refusing to comment further until everything is done not have been the best way to go here…

Storrie himself has also commented on his own position with the club, and whilst he feels he will retain a post he also feels ‘that is irrelevant’ to things with ‘the most important thing is to safeguard Portsmouth Football Club.’
