Life, and Football, Doesn’t Always Rhyme

This isn’t really a poem, because life,
and football, doesn’t always rhyme.
It’s great when it does;
when you walk home from a match
when your team has won
when your spirits are high
(along with your standing in the league!)
and the future is a shining path of glory.

Many years ago, a very wise man said
‘Football isn’t a matter of life and death,
it’s much more important than that!’
I don’t know about you…
but this year, especially this year,
I can really identify with that.

Is it really only two short years,
since we held the cup high;
cheered until our throats were sore,
looked forward to our European Tour
(ok, that one rhymes!)
Looked on with pride as our team,
Our Team, Our Pompey,
supplied quite a few players
for our national team,
Our England.

This has been a shattered season
I’m not going to dwell on that
But we don’t lie down and be beaten
(although some would prefer it if we would)
And on Sunday the 11th of April 2010
The Blue Army will be marching on the capital
Heads held high.

I went up on the train to London last time,
and the Blue Army quite literally
stopped Waterloo Station in its tracks;
hundreds of voices chanting as loud as we could
as we disembarked from the train…
It was an incredible moment that I shall
never, ever forget.

Can we do it again? …Please?

When we won in 2008, it meant the world;
This year? It would mean the whole universe.
