Match of the Day is a difficult decision from that list but I am plumping for the 1970 hammering by Sheffield United. Yes I am mad but there are reasons which I will expand on.

It is really all about lightning striking twice. The Blades last visited Fratton Park in August 1969 and the score was Pompey 1 Sheffield United 5 with Mike Trebilcock scoring the only home goal. In that game David Munks made his home debut playing against his old club.

When the game with Sheffield United game round the next season we all knew it could not happen again – could it? With Pompey`s small squad manager George Smith had only made one change all season when game eleven arrived and team he named was as on the opening day.

United were favourites for promotion and would achieve their aim in May but in the first half of this game they struggled no hold Pompey to 0-0. The second half was a different affair though and they were 2-0 up with ten minutes left when Munks now converted to a defender pulled a goal back. The crowd who had headed for the exits turned round and hope of a point were raised; but it was to be cruelly crushed as the visitors netted three time is the final five minutes.

Same score totally different game but the United side had some stars in those days such as Alan Woodward and Tony Currie and were good to watch but why did they keep scoring five against us? I think those are the only two 5-1 home defeats I have seen too!

As luck would have it when the draw for the third round of the FA Cup was made who did we draw? Yep Sheffield United at home and the score? Wrong Pompey won 2-0 with Ray Hiron and Trebs scoring the second half goals.

Just to prove that it was United not Pompey that were to blame for those five goal thrashings four days after the league game Watford came to town and were mauled 5-0. But more about next week eh!

Just on the subject of goals against your old club Paul Walsh did it in the game at Luton in 1995.
