Quite a few memories there like the miserable night at Dean Court in 1978 when we really learnt the truth about life in Division Four but Match of the Day has to go to the highest scoring Premier League game ever just four years ago.
I have no doubt that this famous game will live in history for many years and also that you will have seen the game many time (or own the DVD). I have been to over 1,000 games in my life and this was simply the craziest especially the second half where eleven goals flew in and a penalty was missed – in fact it was difficult to keep up with the score.
I won`t even try in this short piece to tell the story of the game it would not be possible but let`s look at a few oddities from the game. Scorers of five of the eleven goals are on Pompey`s books today – Benjani, Hreidarsson and Kitson. Matt Taylor was the only Pompey player booked and he was an unused substitute!! Sean Davis’ goal was later given to Ivar Ingimarsson as an own goal. Still used Sean’s pic as column header though!! Both goalkeepers made amazing saves – James for the penalty and Hahnemann from Johnson. Having scored seven in one game Pompey then went six home games without a goal until Benjani scored another hat-trick against struggling Derby – in that time they scored fourteen times on the road winning six times!
I remember that one Vital Pompey member telling us that that was their first ever live game!! What a choice. Here`s one for the memory boys/girls – what colours did Reading play in that day?
