…but can he now walk the walk…

Once again Dave Nugent is talking a good talk, telling The News that he is ready to put his disastrous – from his own personal point of view – first season at Pompey behind him.

He believes that his improved fitness, the work that he has done in the gym and the fact that he can take part in the whole of the pre-season this time round will benefit him and this season ‘is the one for him’: ‘speaking on a personal level, last season was a disaster, really.

‘My fitness, my injuries, the lack of games I played – none of it helped and it’s fair to say I was disappointed with it all.

‘It didn’t help that I signed two weeks into pre-season training last year. From then on I was playing a bit of catch-up with the other lads.

‘Now I can start from scratch and from day one show the gaffer what I can do.

‘I feel good and I’m going to give my all to get into the team. I have to play games.

‘Last season others were scoring, such as Benjani and then Jermain, so I couldn’t argue with that.

‘But I’ve got to try my hardest this season and show the gaffer what I can do.

‘I really want to have a good pre-season – and I think I will. This will be my season.’

As said, one again he is talking a good talk – attitude wise you cannot fault the fella can you and whilst I still firmly believe that he has the quality to make it at the highest level, and as much as I want him to stay I am still not convinced that he is part of the managers long term thinking… that said he really impressed Harry Redknapp in the week leading up to the FA cup final, so if he can carry on doing this who knows?

Once again I can only say that I do no think that he can be written off yet, as others have not been in the past – so he must get the same treatment. Many have said that John Utaka must offer more this season and they will wait until January to see what he offers before finally making up their mind on him, surely Nugent deserves the same sort of thing?

So, all that remains to be said is do you think that this ‘will be the season’ for Nugent? Thoughts as always guys…
