Well, there was more ‘rumour’ and ‘speculation’ on Sunday with Lee Naylor a name that cropped up again…
His name has appeared time and time and time again in connection with Pompey over the years, but nothing has ever happened! But a move was being planned by Pompey according to The Sunday Mirror, which said ‘Portsmouth boss Paul Hart is ready to snap up Celtic left-back Lee Naylor – once Tony Mowbray’s club go out of Europe.’
I have always thought that Naylor was ‘ok’, and have never been against this idea although the more time that passes without a deal ever being done the more I feel we would be better suited ‘looking elsewhere.’
The News today say they asked Paul Hart direct if Naylor was a target and he said: ‘we’ve got a lot of targets and we are looking at a lot of players and trying to whittle them down to get them in.’
That is not an answer either way is it really, it is just avoiding the question and I would question if Hart was even asked about Naylor direct…
To be honest, I would not have a left back as a ‘priority’ position for us to be looking to fill. If we are short, despite his inexperience, I would give James Hurst a go, as he looks the part as a left or right back.
What we do need is strikers, someone to actually score us some goals! Oh, and of course some creativity from the wide areas to supply the ammo.
Modeste M’Bami – not that he is attack minded of course – one of a number of trialist’s this summer, is ‘said’ to have agreed to a 2-year deal but Hart is not giving anything away: ‘I think that’s a bit advanced in that statement about M’Bami.
‘I have to do make a decision eventually. We’ll get back and see how we are and see if we have to make decisions sooner rather than later.’
Fabrice Pancrate, Yassin Moutaouakil and Eugen Bopp are also waiting to find out ‘their fate.’
I would have liked to have seen more of Pancrate actually play as a right sided player as opposed to a striker or on the left – but as it stands from what I have seen I have not seen enough to think he is worth a contract so I would let him go as I would Bopp without a doubt!
Moutaouakil on the other hand, despite being a defender, is one that I would give another go against Rangers, but as already said we need to start thinking more further forward than defenders and defensive players…
