Mattock to return

BBC sport, which is usually pretty ‘on the money’ with what they report, is saying that a deal to bring Joe Mattock back for the rest of the season has been agreed.

This is something The News has also picked up on now.

Unfortunately it is ‘said’ that the resumption of his loan will not come before the weekend, so he will miss our trip to Stamford Bridge to possibly be involved with West Brom in their FA cup tie?

Either way ‘the two clubs are expected to complete the paperwork to bring Mattock back to Fratton Park next week‘.

For me this is good news on two levels.

It (a) ‘tends’ to suggest that whoever the ‘would be’ new owners are they have given satisfactory proof that they have the funding for such a move and can also fulfil other players’ contractual obligations – pay them and the staff! – and (b) it of course sees a decent player return to Fratton Park!

At the start of his loan spell I was less than impressed but the 21-year-old has grown in stature during his loan with Pompey and looks very much at home at Fratton now.

Apparently, and I am not sure how accurate this is, he is out of contract in the summer?

If so I would ‘think’ that there is a good chance that a permanent arrival as a free agent could come about at the end of his loan – although, due to his age, West Brom would of course be due some compensation.

For now though lets just be happy that Mattock is coming back…
