Kennedy’s mixed emotions

Matt Kennedy has continued his impressive start to life at Pompey with his first goal – it wasn’t anymore than a consolation though in a defeat at Northampton on Tuesday.

Obviously the Cardiff loanee was happy to score his first goal, which came early in the 2nd half with the Blues already two down, but defeat left him frustrated as another three points to follow up the win at Wimbledon were wanted.

He told portsmouthfc.co.uk: ‘There are obviously mixed emotions. The main thing was to get three points, especially after the victory at the weekend. It’s hard because we played well and had a lot more crosses and chances than the opposition. So it just wasn’t to be for us, but obviously I’m delighted to get off the mark for the season and hopefully I can contribute a lot more to the team.’

On the goal specifically he added: ‘The ball dropped nicely for me and sometimes you just catch it. It was a good goal to be fair. I was getting the ball across before the break, but at half-time they told me to take the man on a bit more. That’s what I did and obviously I got the goal, which gives the whole team more confidence, as well as the fans.’

Kennedy’s started well and looks as if he’ll have a decent future at Fratton Park, assuming he stays beyond his initial season-long loan, but we cannot get too ahead of ourselves as it’s only a few games into his spell.

If the winger continues as he’s started though Kennedy looks as if he’ll be a very good addition.

Looking back to the game he thought there were ‘a lot of positives’ but was clearly ‘disappointed with the result’ yet feels we’ll soon gel and start pushing on.

Concluding: ‘We’ve got a young team and consistency is a big thing in football, but I’m sure that we’ll click sooner rather than later.’
