After sweeping the boards with the various supporters groups’ Player of the Year awards Glen Johnson completed his clean sweep by collecting all before him again during the end of season gala dinner awards ceremony last night.

An outstanding season for Pompey, and to be fair England, saw Johnson beat competition from Sean Davis and Peter Crouch to be named the Players’ Player of the Year.

The Fans’ Player of the Year was of course added to this – was it ever in doubt?

And the hat-trick was completed with him winning the Goal of the Year for his strike against Hull at Fratton in our 2-2 draw last year.

It is hard to go against these, I think it is fair to say that he was a ‘shoe in’ for at least 2 of the awards and for me I was certain his goal against Hull would also be enough to earn him that award too, as it proved…

David James was honoured for his outstanding contribution to the Pompey community, but could not be presented with his award as he had already left due to his should surgery taking place today.

The Young Player of the Year, unsurprisingly and rightly went to Matt Ritchie. The 19-year-old has had a fantastic season on loan with Dagenham and will be without a shadow of a doubt the player for us to watch out for next season – I just hope that he gets a chance, maybe we could give him a burst on Sunday?

Congratulations to all the award winners, richly deserved – lets just hope that Johnson’s awards do not prove to be his last with the club…
