Its the little things that make it priceless

For me, whilst I know it is not always possible for me or many others, Saturday – despite not being the most ‘spectacular of spectacle’ – showed just why I love being at a game so much…

Yep, you have the actual travel of the day, the camaraderie with your friends, mates and fellow Pompey fans – and the opposition fans many times – and that is not to mention the fact that you get a first hand account of the days goings on.

Although it is the (sometimes) little things that you would not have seen, heard or noticed otherwise, certainly not first hand and sometimes not even at all if they are not reported, captured on camera or shown on video or films on youtube and the like that you cannot beat about football.

I would image that most have seen and heard about The Herminator’s antics at the end of the game at Scunny by now, right?

Actually being there for something that seems small or trivial was in fact priceless!

Taking off a shirt and throwing into the crowd, or trying to, is nothing that unusual from a player – certainly at the end of the season and at the end of what ‘might’ be his last game for a club? – but being able to witness first hand the extraordinary achievement of being able to somehow land the shirt an advertising hording dangling from the roof, I am not sure but ‘think’ it was the scoreboard, was exactly that, priceless!

The look of amazement on his face that he was able to achieve something he most probably would not have been able to again if he tried was fantastic.

For a brief moment after this, as he stripped off most of his kit and threw that – including his boots and shin pads – into the crowd I thought we were going to see something that we have not since Michalis Vlachos some years ago when he stripped to his undercrackers!

Also seeing Steve Cotterill take off his jumper and then ‘trick’ the fans into thinking he was throwing it into the crowd before he eventually did, was something I, and many others, would have missed had it not been for the fact that I was fortunate enough to be there, and for that I was grateful.

As I say these moments might seem ‘small’, even ‘trivial’ although it is things like this, and other moments before, during or after a game – or in some way involved in the whole day – that makes following Pompey, whatever the outcome, so rewarding for me.

So with this in mind, no matter what I might think, how much I might moan or groan, that is why I love it so much and why I miss it so much when I cannot, more and more down to finances these days, make these trips…

What happened to The Herminator’s shirt though?

I would guess most also now know the answer to this, but if not all is revealed on The Pompey Site – here.
