Grant reflects on latest defeat

So, we slumped to another defeat after being ‘battered’ – almost quite literally for some on the field! – at Liverpool last night, Avram Grant did not really have a lot to say about this really…

For me, not that I want to lay all the blame at his feet, the mistake from Jamie Ashdown, who helped gift the 1st goal to the bin dippers, was the turning point – we collapsed after that, but I cannot help but think we could have got through to half time at 0-0 otherwise as we were not really coming under that much pressure, not that we put them under much either to honest!

Although Grant was not blaming Ashdown at all, mistakes were made and that is what cost us: ‘Jamie is a good goalkeeper. I will not speak about mistakes because it is part of the game.

‘We started the game okay, we played how we wanted to play and then came the first goal and we lost our shape and they scored a second and third goal in seven minutes and the game was finished.

‘We made mistakes after that and we were punished for it.’

Clearly we were not good, we cannot say otherwise – then again we have known this all season, right?

We lack that quality that is needed but all in all we cannot really fault effort or commitment. Then again some of this seemed to be lacking last night. If I were a Liverpool fan though I am not sure that I would be getting that carried away by this result though as they will need to be a lot better to get into the top 4 I think – as for their fans and the ‘famous Anfield atmosphere?’ My arse! This is 2-years running now that it has been like a library when I have been there.

It also seems that Steven Gerrard ‘might’ be in trouble for a clash with Michael Brown. I saw him go down, and we got a freekick but nothing else happened – I have only very briefly seen something on sky sports but it does look like Gerrard does get him so it is about time this thug, who I used to have a lot of time for, got punished, right? And people say Brown is a thug…

I thought the atmosphere from our fans, and it was a small band but noisy, was top class as always – my biggest disappointment of the night was, and something that has angered me since, was the fact that NOT ONE of the players, manager or coaching staff came over to the fans after, one player even gave his shirt away to a Liverpool fan!
