Sven Goran Eriksson might remain the bookies favourite for the Pompey job – and Chix’s favourite, with his words ‘being marked’ 🙂 – but he will not be leaving Mexico in the immediate future…well not until the end of March anyway…
Sky sports news’ ‘chief reporter’ Bryan Swanson has apparently been told by the Mexican Football Federation that the Swede will be in charge of the country for the friendly with Bolivia – 11th March – and the world cup qualifier with Costa Rica – 28th March, at least, although they have previously said he will be there for the long haul of course.
Clearly the Mexican FF do not want to pay him off, he does not want to leave without a payoff and we do not want to meet the compensation figure we would have to if we wanted to buy him out of his contract – so it is quite literally a Mexican standoff!
Suits me fine – for the immediate future anyway, we carry on as we are then look at him again down the line, or, and maybe better still look elsewhere at the end of the season…
Yep, for me, this is not a problem, the early signs under Paul Hart and Bryan Kidd have been good, so leaving these two to see us through for the time being – as said, even until the summer – is not a bad thing. This buys us time to ensure we get the right man in place not to mention leaves time for the ‘proposed’ takeover to be worked on, and whoever does come in, assuming someone does, then they will want there own man so what is the rush
The pair have a lot of backing from the players, with the Herminator becoming the latest to back them, which is all good to hear. But I do think it is time the players stopped gobbing off and let the football do the talking – I hope this does not become the case, but ‘if’ we went on a losing run again would their tune change again? Less talk now guys and much, much more action – what you do on the pitch is what counts, and lets see this back up your comments…
Maybe Eriksson will eventually become the new Pompey manager, maybe he will not, in the meantime we have two vastly experienced men guiding us and so far guiding us well.
Should we get through to the summer and still be without a manager, and still without a new owner – as we will need some money invested – then we worry, but that is way off, even if it might not seem it as a week in football is a hell of a long time…

Pele still some way off
When Pele was bought in on loan from Porto at the end of January former Pompey manager Tony Adams insisted that we would not see the best of him this season, we might not even see him at all!
For me, these thoughts were thoughts that I believed were shielding the youngster from expectations and he would feature sooner rather than later, especially with his then thoughts ‘players will be signed that can come in and do a job almost immediately’…
However it does appear that he really is not going to be making his 1st team breakthrough, into the squad, let alone starting, anytime soon with Paul Hart saying that he is still some way off match fitness.
Pele was signed with the view to a permanent transfer, but I do not think this is a nailed on, so it seems a really strange one to have totally gone against the policy with his signing… He might be young, but the guy has played for Inter Milan – at an even younger age – so he is not exactly a novice, even if he might be to the English game, but then again the same applies to other foreign signings, even if they are vastly experienced…
Of course though, as stated above, there is still a long way to go this season but the reserve fixtures tail off, so quite how he can work up full match fitness remains to be seen – hopefully this will not be another wasted loan move, with money wasted on it, something that we have been very guilty of with a fair few loan signings over the years!
