Eradicate errors and endear yourself!

These were words from the mouth of Paul Cook referring to Brian Murphy following his latest, pretty costly, error last weekend!

Confidence in Murphy isn’t something too many Pompey fans have in the goalie, which is the opinion I’m getting, with mistakes like the ones against Macclesfield and Wycombe not helping install this…

In his defence, when it was 2-0 at the time, Murphy did make a good save to make sure the Blues stayed in the game to redeem himself somewhat with Cook highlighting that save (and point) with what he told the News this week.

Although he also made it clear the best way to ‘endear himself’ to his doubters is, obviously, by ‘eradicating errors’ and proving what he can do:

‘It’s been tough for Murph, because he’s made a couple of big mistakes But he’s also made a couple of big saves after those mistakes. The lad missed a chance to make it 3-0 last weekend. Would we have come back from that?

‘What Murph must do to endear himself to our fans is eradicate those mistakes.’

I think he’ll do well; at least he should, at this stage to earn a new deal when his short-term one expires at the end of the year?

This is a decision for Cookie to make though isn’t it and I trust he’ll do what’s right for PFC…but it’s not just him making mistakes. Thing is when you’re a goalie these errors prove more costly!

We’ve seen mistakes, not just from Murphy in fairness, cost us points but as far as Cookie’s concerned, even if some – perhaps many! – could have been avoided a few couldn’t…or could they:

‘We’re not stupid. We’ve conceded far too many goals for the pressure we’ve come under. It was commented on that we haven’t conceded many good goals. The goals against us have been set-pieces and poor defending.

‘Carlisle was a penalty and 25-yard screamer. Is it a good goal? A left-back shooting from 25 yards on his weaker foot?

‘There was a backpass throw-in and two goals from set-pieces at Notts County. It’s sloppiness. That’s what we call it and, unfortunately, we have to brush up on it.’
