Avram Grant seems to have lifted into legend status in the past couple of weeks – he has always been ‘popular’ but this popularity among the fans has gone into overdrive since Fulham (a) and in particular Sunderland (h) last week when he stormed onto the pitch.
He did this no harm, not least with overlooking a 4-1 win, in their backyard, over Scum yesterday but also with his reaction to the fans after this final whistle, and after the game he again spoke about his ’emotions’ and ’emotions for Portsmouth Football Club’: ‘I’m very emotional and this is an emotional game
‘If you win, you make 250,000 other people happy, this is what football is about.
‘If I wrote a book about Portsmouth it would be a best-seller.’
It is not only his own emotion, and passion, that he sees and feels he says it is everyone connected with this club that feels it and he does not want the courts to decided our fates.
Either way he again stressed that he, and everyone else, will continue to fight until the end: ‘I see the passion of everyone at the club – the fans, the players and the staff. There is a passion to succeed. I was very happy to see the decision from the High Court. There are many people around and it’s not their fault.
‘I had two choices. To give up or to show to the players that we will make our spirit even higher. I said that to the players and to my children when there are difficult times you need to show your character.
‘I will fight until the last moment. As long as we have a chance on the pitch. What happens in court is out of my hands. If they need to punish someone then it is a person that does something wrong. I don’t know who that is but it is not us.’
Quincy Owusu-Abeyie’s impact as a sub cannot be underestimated, his arrival changed the course of the game – so hopefully he will be used a little more now – and Grant is looking to get the most out of the loanee at Pompey: ‘the only thing we could do is bring loan players in who were not under contract.
‘Quincy was one of them.
‘I knew him from Arsenal and know that he has a lot of quality. I like to develop players and get the best from them and he will be very good if we get potential from him.’
We DO need to give Grant great credit for the tactical moves he made, they certainly paid off – a little in the most difficult of weeks recently this has not always been the case, but lets hope now with an almost ‘nothing to lose’ mentality with issues well and truly out of his hands now he continues to show this kind of stance, as it WILL make a difference.
I am still grinning like a Cheshire cat over beating the Scummers and that is not going to change for sometime – whatever will be will be now, for a little while longer at least the thoughts on this remain on the backburner for me…
