David James, who pulled off a string of world-class – and I do not think it would be over the top to say world-class saves – to keep us in the game against Scum, knows how important it was for ‘the important half’ of Hampshire to win: ‘it is an important day for the FA Cup and Hampshire – well the important half!’

Looking at ‘what our future will be’ is not something, not that you can ignore this of course, I want to spend too much time look at over the next 24-hours really – as said I DO want to milk this for all its worth – although James’ own ‘instinct’ tells him that things will be fine and we WILL take our place in the quarter finals, when asked on this issue he answered: ‘my instinct says we will be. I think it is just too important for football as a whole.

‘It is important that we stay in business and that Portsmouth keep flying the flag in the Premiership.’

I thought it was a tough call between James and Jamie O’Hara as to who was the man of the match, but most gave it to O’Hara who said this win was for the fans: ‘we had to give something back to the fans today because its been a dire season, but today and all season, they have been fantastic.

The on-loan man pointed to the tactical changes that Avram Grant made at the break and the arrivals into the game in the 2nd half as the areas that made so much difference – which to be fair they did, now lets see this every week: ‘the gaffer changed it at half time, we went three in midfield with one upfront, and that seemed to create more space for us to get on the ball.

‘We hit them on the counter attack in the second half and killed them off.’
