In all honesty what the future will bring for ANY player that is contracted, or going out of contract is anybodies guess at the moment, right? Although hearing players say that they DO want to stay with Pompey is not a bad thing to hear is it?
Quite if they will be given this chance remains to be seen…
Not that is was an entirely wholehearted ‘I want to stay’ speech given by Steve Finnan, but the former Ireland man has said that he is ‘not worried about playing in the Championship’ so if something is offered to him by the club he will ‘listen to what they say.’
His contract was for a year with the option to another, although to be honest I am not convinced this option will be given to him and, even I see the benefits of his experience and I do think the 34-year-old has grown in stature during the season the fact that he has only played 19 games this season due to ongoing injury problems worries me.
The other ‘expressing a desire to stay’ is John Utaka.
He said ‘it would be nice if Avram and I were still here at the club next season’ – given his wages, even if they are not the £80,000 previously suggested, he would most certainly be one of those that the club try to move on but will he get the takers?
Given his talent, and whatever we think about the guy his talent cannot be doubted, you would think he could tear the no power league to bits – sadly having talent is not always enough it comes down to application as well, and this is an area he seriously lacks!
Time will tell what happens, although I think, all in all, I would be ‘surprised’ to see either pulling on a Pompey shirt next season…
One man that definitely will not be doing this is Aruna Dindane.
Staying in England is looking more likely though and ‘word on the street’ is he added further to his value, and saw interest rise in him, with another decent display at the weekend.
‘Reports’ are saying that Mick McCarthy is ‘prepared to beat Blackburn’ to his signature by offering more than the £2m they had for the striker, which would be music to Lens’ ears as there ‘apparent’ asking price is £2.7m – this is gradually dropping down from the £4m we were ‘meant’ to pay…
