Defoe’s delight at debut goal

As he always does Jermain Defoe marked his debut with a goal, and as he told pfcTV he was obviously delighted with this: ‘I just thought to myself I had to be patient and wait for an opportunity and when that opportunity came I had to take it. I’m delighted that I scored.

‘I said to the boys I always try to nick a goal on my debut and I managed to do that’.

As he said himself, he always scores on his debut – he managed it with West Ham, Bournemouth – when on loan – and with Spurs, now he has done it with us, and hopefully it will be the first of many, many goals we see him score here – which I am sure it will be.

Defoe also went on to talk about the atmosphere at Fratton Park and how happy he was to score in front of the Fratton End: ‘even when I used to come here as a Spurs player, I always thought the atmosphere was unbelievable.

‘It was like that against Chelsea and it was great to score at the Fratton End’.

He did also talk about us being a little unlucky not to have got all 3 points, which we could have got – but I am more than happy with the point that we got. However we now have to make sure that we build on this and put in the type of performance that we did yesterday regularly at Fratton Park again.

As we know – and the club have now officially confirmed – he is only ‘technically’ on loan at the moment but I honestly do not think that we have anything to worry about, and although with Pompey things are never straightforward I do not think we have too much to worry about and will not lose him…
