The Benjani out and Jermain Defoe in transfer saga has taken another twist with the emergence that Defoe has only ‘technically’ signed on loan for the time being…

However it ‘should’ not be a problem getting the status of the loan of Defoe switched to a permanent – as agreed – transfer as the premier league are said to be, and I quote ‘strongly sympathetic’ to our current financial position regarding the Benjani situation, which they are looking to push through so both Pompey and City will have the players that it appeared they had arranged to sign on deadline day anyway.

Regarding the Defoe deal, the premier league are also believed to think that we have acted in the best interests of all concerned by firstly arranging the loan, which will become a permanent transfer once the funds are secured – he is registered as a Pompey player though, so whatever happens he is a Pompey player, with the worst case scenario being he is only on loan until the summer when he would then sign when the funds are secured.

Benjani has been quoted as saying he now wants to join City, and Pompey feel this will happen – so it does appear likely that this deal will finally be completed this week, although the price could be renegotiated slightly with it thought a slight knee problem wants them to see the reported £9m fee wrangled down a little.

To clarify, Defoe is a Pompey player, this cannot and will not change – even if it is only a loan until the summer – Benjani looks highly likely to become a Man City player this week after all, but a renegotiated fee looks probable.

This is typical Pompey is it not – things can never be simple can they…
