Davis – will he stay or will he go?

Sean Davis is about to enter into the final year of his contract, so he is naturally feeling a little uneasy about his future, which he does want to be at Fratton Park however.

Since Lassana Diarra arrived he has barely got a sniff – although he has also been injured, but in fairness to Diarra is there anyone at this club who would not be kept out by the Frenchman? He is good enough to keep most players at most clubs out of the team, or at least should be?

Davis got his chance last weekend and did a good job at Spurs I thought and he should retain his place this weekend, but he faces the heartbreak of missing out on next weekends semi final, if it is not for the fact that others come back in, it could be through suspension, as a booking this weekend will see him hit with a 2 game ban, starting next weekend.

My own thinking is that in the early months of the season Davis was in with a shout of getting the player of the season award, something I would have never expected just a few months prior, and in all honesty had he left last summer I would not have minded, however those thoughts soon changed. He has been unlucky with suspension and injuries in recent times, but his excursions in Spain probably did not help him either.

With a year of his contract to go there is no immediate panic to sort this out, but from his point of view you can appreciate that he does want some security. My thinking is that he will do well to get regular football, as when all are fit there are others ahead of him, and they will remain ahead of him virtually regardless it would seem unless they cannot play.

That said would I want him sold in the summer? I would say most certainly not, but if he will not get a contract extension here it would be likely that the club will cash in on him in the summer rather than lose him for nothing? I guess a lot depends on who does and does not leave Fratton Park this summer really – as well as who arrives ?
