The Pompey view from Basra – Part 1

After a week in the heat and dryness of the outskirts of Basra, I have met a few Pompey Fans, within the Army Navy and RAF.

So far no Southampton supporters but I believe they may have all gone into hiding!!

Every fan out here is waiting in anticipation of the FA Cup Semi Final and they are all gutted that they are not able to attend, but the match will be on in the Bar/Cabin that we have with no beer as its dry out here, so will be toasting Pompey walking out at Wembley with a Coke or Fanta!!!

Portsmouth FC have now despatched 125 foam hands and 125 foam FA Cups to Basra for the troops which will be expected early next week and the fans that I have told have been cheered up by the news that they will be receiving these gifts from PFC. This is a very generous gift from PFC and a lot of supporters from other clubs are surprised by how generous they have been and the morale has picked up slightly because of this.

As you have probably all heard, it has got pretty bad out here again. Thankfully I don’t have to go into the City but we are only a mile from the City Centre so can hear the explosions and as well they decide to send the odd rocket our way. We are protected by Guns, which fire before they hit us but one day they will hit I’m sure. The beds are more like bunkers with a mattress in them, nicknamed Stonehenge as if one does hit then we are well protected at night and the food isn’t bad either!!!

Well we shall all be cheering on PFC tomorrow against Wigan in the 100+ degrees that it is out here, but the morale is there still!!! All those that are going to the match then give an extra cheer from us all and if you do see anyone from PFC please send them our best wishes for the match and of course the big game next Saturday.
