City want Benjani – but on loan?

Quite what fee had been ‘agreed’ between City and Pompey for Benjani is not known – early reports ‘claimed’ around £9m, with City wanting this renegotiated to £7.6m due to a problem picked up with a knee in his medical, other reports say the fee is £7.6m anyway and they want this lowered even more – but there is yet more of a twist!

The whole transfer saga is dragging on and on now, but it is now being ‘claimed’ in the latest twist that City want Benjani, but only want him on loan now?

I do not know the full ins and outs of it all, but my own thinking is that we ‘apparently’ agreed a fee with City, so I would say they either pay that up or we just bring Benjani back and live with the consequences.

It is easy for me to say, but I cannot see how signing Jermain Defoe and having to ultimately keep Benjani could ‘damage us beyond repair in our financial stakes’. Worst case scenario would appear – with the ‘books being balance’ well this season – it would put us £9m – money for Defoe, yep lets tie this deal up I say – and an extra set of wages down, which is not pocket change granted, but why should we now change the terms of the Benjani deal that was agreed?

City did not apply to have him on loan – as we have with Defoe – so the way I see it, if City want him they should pay what was agreed, if not they should be told where to go and lets get Benjani back here!

It has also come to light today that Liverpool ‘apparently’ have a similar arrangement with West Ham for Javier Mascherano to the one we have with Spurs for Defoe, and this could in theory become a long term scenario for both – loans with a promise to buy…

It was always said that the Defoe deal was dependant on Benjani leaving, but this is not strictly the case, yep it will make more ‘financial sense’ if this happens is my reading of events, but it is not strictly the be all and end all of things as the current deal stands in the state it is now – which will become permanent, even if we have to wait until the summer, the only problem with waiting until then is he could not play against Spurs…
