Campbell handed Pompey captaincy

Harry Redknapp has officially handed Sol Campbell the captains armband for the 2007/08 season – which will not only put to bed any lingering thoughts that he could leave, but also send out a clear message to those courting him.

Campbell takes over from Dejan Stefanovic, who has captained the side for the last couple of seasons, but with his starting place far from assured this season the right decision has been made.

It was slightly puzzling when Redknapp previously said that Stefanovic would retain the captaincy, as my thinking, along with many others, is that he will do well to feature often enough to have justified this on merit.

He has been a great servant to the club, but on the evidence of last season he would have some catching up to do to warrant his place in the starting line up week in week out, with Hermann Hreidarsson now looking the likely man to start the season at left back.

Redknapp will not discard Stefanovic, nor should he, but it is a near certainty, that as a player, this will be his final season with the club. If his lack of involvement in pre season is anything to go by he will not feature that often this season, so there is the chance he could leave in the January transfer window if he is not playing much – possibly, but unlikely, before?
