There are some rumours doing the rounds that Pompey target Stephen Appiah is now a free agent.

The Ghanaian captain has been linked with Pompey several times over the years and the news that he is now a free agent – with it suggested that he has agreed a severance with Fenerbahce to leave the Turkish club, with some reports saying that he was disappointed with treatment received to a major injury which caused him to miss the African nations – will be music to Pompey ears…

Appian if quoted on the Ghanaian FA Site as having told African Radio station Happy FM: ‘Now I am a free agent.

‘A few issues happened between me and the club so I no longer play for them.’

His injury was a pretty severe one and he has not played since November last year but he says that he feels good and just wants to play again, but the move must be the right one with him playing down the suggestion that he is heading to Brescia in Italy: ‘those stories about me and Brescia are not true. My personal trainer works with Brescia and I did a lot of work with him there during the off season so maybe that is where the rumours are from.

‘But there a few offers I am studying even though I am not in a hurry. I want to make the right choice. At the end of it all the most important thing is that wherever I end up, I will give it my absolute all.’

If he is fully fit and available on a free it is a no-brainer isn’t it, we would be crazy not to bring him in if we can…

The ‘major’ problem is can we afford him? We are selling players to balance the book so it does not look likely. He might be a free agent but he still needs paying, and he will not come cheap!
