Go back some 12-months or so ago and remember the rumours of player departures – Matt Taylor, Gary O’Neil and Sean Davis… As much as I wanted none to go, as lets face it is not very often that we do we have a player that we really want to leave, Davis was the one that I would have least minded going…
As it turned out he stayed and the others eventually went… I was not disappointed that he stayed, but would have preferred O’Neil to have stayed, but he proved more profitable, so that was that.
Davis came into the side, and although some really do not rate him at all – mentioning no names russellm 😉 – I maintain my thoughts that between August and January, when he was a regular in our side he was as good as anyone, arguably on for player of the season at that point?
Along came January, and with it Lassana Diarra arrived, with he and other preferred. We also had the much publicised ‘piss up’ in Spain, which Davis and several others were part of during a training camp. His card looked like it had been marked, and when marked by Harry Redknapp very, very few have lived to see this slate wiped clean…
He barely got a look-in for the second half of the season and his omission from the FA cup final squad looked as if it had sealed his fate and that was that! Links to Celtic, Fulham, Middlesbrough, Hull and West Ham grew over the summer, with it claimed that he even turned down a move to Celtic. His pre-season saw a player that looked as though he was resigned to his fate, but a player that also could no be bothered to even put himself in the shop window.
Fast forward slightly, back to where we are now, or have been in recent weeks – with so many players ‘linked’ with moves away he was again the one that I would have preferred to see go – but stay he did! Maybe no offers came in for him, maybe they did but the move was not one he wanted? Simple facts are he stayed.
An injury kept him out of the Chelski squad, how true this was I doubted, but the news came last week that he was fit again. To my amazement when I arrived at Fratton on Monday he was not only in the squad, but also in the starting 11 for the game with Manyoo, and to be fair and to give credit where it is due he played well.
He used to be a player with an eye for goal, with him regularly finding the net at Fulham but since a move to Spurs and then onto us this eye has gone… If it will ever return is anybodies guess, but if it did then we have a player that has been around the England squad before so he cannot be a bad player can he, as we know he is not.
Is Davis back in the side on merit, or was it needs must? Maybe he was put back in so we could ‘put him in the shop window’ ahead of the transfer window closing?
Whatever, I find myself once again saying ‘I am glad that Sean Davis has not left’… Well, yet anyway.
