21 clean sheets…

…I think we need a bigger airing cupboard!

The clean sheet against West Ham on Tuesday was our 21st of the season so far, which is up 9 on what we managed in the whole of last season.

The reason for this mean defence according to what Glen Johnson has told the Pompey Site is the fact that the usual back five of David James, Hermann Hreidarsson, Sol Campbell, Sylvain Distin and of course Johnson work so well as a unit, but even more importantly is the fact that we defend as a team, with this starting from the front: ‘we all work very well together but it’s not just the back five.

‘Defending starts from the top and you could see David Nugent closing down the West Ham full-backs which obviously helps us because it keeps the ball up the other end of the pitch.

‘So it’s an all round team performance but our back five is definitely up there with the best.

‘When we take the lead we know how to close the game down and we keep defending well.

‘It’s simple really – if we take the lead and keep a clean sheet then we win the game’.

21 clean sheets must mean we have a ratio of around 1 in 2 this season as we cannot have played many games more than the early 40s so far this season? This is a phenomenal record that very few clubs at any level in England would be able to match surely…

This is just another sign of just how far we have come over the years, as who would have thought we could keep that number of clean sheets whilst playing at the highest level eh! It is simple really, if you do not concede you do not lose, if you score a goal you win and that is what we have done so often this season.
