Wilson in confident mood

Marc Wilson has joined the growing band of Pompey players, both recently and in the recent weeks – despite our start to the season – in being convinced that we will stay up this season. Of course they cannot really say anything else though can they…

In light of the Everton showing, and the more recent games, he has told pfcTV that he is pleased with the way the team is starting to ‘bond’ and feels sure you can turn out season round, starting this weekend at Wolves: ‘I think we can definitely turn it around. The lads are starting to bond.

‘The evidence against Everton was that we could have won that game very easily. It was frustrating because we put in a good performance and could have had five goals.

‘You can blame bad luck, but you have to put the ball in the back of the net to win games. We know we have to go and get three points on Saturday at Wolves.’

If we continue to play like we have in the past 2-3 weeks, on the whole, and of course, with some luck and better finishing, can start finding the back of the net – if you do not score you cannot win – then there is no reason why we cannot stay up!

I still feel that we are better than at least 3 other sides, but we must beat Wolves this weekend.

If we do this we go into the international break on a real high and have something to build on going into the Spurs game, if we lose then it will be a hell of a long couple of weeks between games and would make the job, in that game and the ones that follow, even at this stage all the more difficult…

As for Wilson himself I thought the guy came back in an played really well, it seems fairly clear that Paul Hart rates him as he started the season with him in defence – maybe out of necessity – and put him straight back in after he recovered from injury, even ahead of others he had signed.

He has certainly matured as a player, both mentally and physically – and put in a lot of work in the gym to build himself up into a stronger and more powerful footballer – so this bodes well for all in the future. He might lack the pace of others, but he seems to have the right footballing brain, and the right footballing brain can compensate for a lack of pace – past history shows this…
