What A Sickener!

What A Sickener! By Terraceman who remembers 1984.

Remember that Steve Moran goal in injury time against us in the FA Cup? Well, that was the headline in that night’s Sports Mail. I had a feeling of deja vu Tuesday night, made more acute by being reduced to waiting for the sporadic twitter feeds from “The News” journalist on their pokey web site, anxious as the time ticked away to the final minute and facing a corner after the last feed announced Fulton had landed a kick into touch just yards from THEIR corner flag! This type of communication is poor fare for the twenty-first Century supporter, checking in from Hawaii, Canada, Thailand, or in my case, Norfolk.

For me it brings back memories of phoning up after the match, on a special fan’s hotline – For all the latest news and views… Disappointed, or to use the football term, GUTTED, that we could not hold out those few last seconds as the Ref put the whistle to his mouth, but hey, “Swings and Roundabouts” I was at Fratton when Jason Stockley’s diving header brought last minute parity in the thrilling 3-3 draw after going three down against this very team earlier in the season.

To experience the highs, you must experience the lows, and boy, do I know about them, cos this is Pompey we are talking about, right? I sorted in disgust and took it out on the computer exit button before tramping up the stairs to bed – with nae cocoa! Of course, I could have listened to express FM? But Alan Knight, keeper and legend he may be, commentator he ain’t. Don’t take my word for it, he said so himself, saying on air that he could not possibly describe the 48 pass move leading to Roberts’ fine finish against the cherries. Well that is yer fackin job! Us poor saps have to listen to this drivel if we ain’t at the game! JEEZ.

In the morning I did not feel the hurt so much, and could see the result for what it was, a timely reminder of how ephemeral success really is in the beautiful game. Just ask those Bolton fans, the ones that probably said “serves you right” as suppaw’ers of the blues bemoaned their luck a few seasons back. Yep, this is the sport that truly turns full circle, and I still feel confident that we may make a success of the play-offs, which surely has to be measured as a magnificent effort, should “Ve Ledz” make it in the post season lottery.

We will experience another high – fer sure – as Arry would say.
