Blackpool could move closer a top-seven finish if the visit of Cheltenham ends in a Pools win. The Robins, 21st, could secure themselves a place in the Football League if the unbeaten run is extended to five with a win – and Newport fail to match their result.
A Colchester win over already promoted Plymouth could move the U’s into the top-seven. The Pilgrims still have an eye on being crowned champions so might be able to draw level on leaders Doncaster with a victory.
Crawley need to match, or better, Newport’s result to ensure they can’t drop out of the Football League. However, one win in the last 10 is form of a side that could be relegated – then again visiting Carlisle, eighth, have also won just the once in their previous 10 and sit outside the play-offs on goal difference.
Another side that need to at least match what Newport do to end any relegation fears are Crewe. Alexandra would confirm the relegation of Leyton Orient too if Orient – unbeaten in two and looking for successive wins – can’t collect all three points at Gresty Road.
Two defeats in three means Exeter, sixth, can’t afford to drop many more points or they could lose a top-even place. Morecambe, unbeaten in three, could cause the Grecians to slip out of a play-off spot if they take anything from their visit to Devon.
Grimsby are sitting safely in midtable whereas one of Russell Slade’s former sides Yeovil can still be relegated. However, a first win in seven for the Glovers last time round means they simply have to match Newport’s result to confirm a stay in the Football League.
If Hartlepool can end a six game run without a win by claiming all from points from Barnet’s – who have lost four in a row – visit to Victoria Park they’ll definitely remain outside of the bottom-two – anything less and Poolie could slide into the relegation zone with two to play.
Luton, albeit unlikely given the sequence of results it would require, could confirm a play-off place with a Kenilworth Road victory from the visit of Notts County – beaten for the first time in six last time round.
A positive reaction to the end of a three game winning run – when thrashed by Plymouth – by Newport against Accrington and the Exiles could move out of the relegation zone, a defeat and they could be pushed closer to a return to non-league football. Stanley on the other hand could see a remarkable rise from relegation trouble to a play-off place complete if they win at Rodney Parade and other results go for them?
Portsmouth’s return to League 1 was confirmed on Easter Monday – technically Pompey, third, can still win the title but it’s unlikely they’ll overthrow both Plymouth and Doncaster to do this? Anything but a victory over Cambridge, ninth, and those chances are officially over – a Donny win would end these slim hopes anyway. The U’s could move into the top-seven with a win at Fratton Park.
A Stevenage win over Mansfield and it will boost their top-seven finish hopes whilst seriously damage those of the visiting Stags, 12th, as the two point deficit is likely to grow towards an insurmountable gap – a win at Boro and that could change things completely.
Wycombe, 13th, are only two points off the play-offs so will keep their chances very much alive with a win over already promoted Doncaster. Another Rovers defeat – or dropped points – and Plymouth and Portsmouth could still eye a potential title charge ahead of the current League 2 leaders?
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
