He’ll not be able to play this afternoon but ahead of Walsall’s visit to Fratton Park Pompey secured the signing of Chesterfield’s Dion Donohue.

Admittedly I cannot say I know too much about the guy other than the fact I’ve heard of him and know he came through the Everton academy.

However, clearly the versatility Donohue shows, given the fact he can play in defence and midfield – primarily a midfielder I believe – has appealed to Kenny Jackett.

The boss told portsmouthfc.co.uk: ‘We have brought in a bright and energetic young player. He has a very good left-foot and adds versatility to our squad.’

I’m assuming Donohue, despite the fact he’s seen as a midfielder first and foremost, has been signed with the left back vacancy in mind? I say this due to the fact Jackett said a new left back was his ‘priority’ signing – that being said another central midfielder is clearly needed too.

Donohue, proven in League One, didn’t take much convincing to join Pompey and as soon as the Blues showed an interest he wanted the move.

He told portsmouthfc.co.uk: ‘It was the start of the week when I got the phone call to say that Portsmouth were interested. I obviously replied that I wanted to come and then it hit me that the move was actually going to happen. Now I’m just excited – and grateful – to be here and I can’t wait to get the blue shirt on. This is a massive club and a great opportunity.

Adding: ‘I’ve had two seasons in League One, so I know the division and I’m sure that we’re going to do well. It’s definitely the right time for me to kick on and further my career – and I’m delighted this is the place where I can do that.’

Given the fact Donohue has, by his own admission, become ‘quite used’ to playing at left back I think this answers the question as to where he’ll play? However, he’s comfortable in a range of roles.

Donohue, 23, said: ‘I was originally a central midfielder, but have filled in at left-back for the past two years at Chesterfield and have got quite used to it. I’m more of a forward thinking type of player and I like getting up the pitch when I can. It’s nice to know that I can play in other positions because you never know when you’re going to have to fill in.’

Welcome to Fratton, now let’s see what you can do over the next two years, at least.

Donohue signed a two year deal when signing from Chesterfield on Friday evening for an undisclosed amount – the Blues also hold the option of a further 12 months.
