Varney or Pearce?

The ‘rumours’ that Luke Varney could very well become the latest player to leave Pompey have been steadily growing recently.

At the weekend it was starting to be claimed that Forest – were/are they not in financial trouble anyway?! – were looking to sign him on loan until the end of the season with ‘a view’ to a permanent signing in the summer?

Given who the Forest manager is, and who brought Varney to Fratton, this may well just be lazy journalism with this an easy ‘link’ to make via the previous connection…

Then again Jason Pearce is hardly short of admirers is he, he himself admits that he feels he may well prove to be ‘the next’ to go anyway!

What is an absolute cast iron certainly is that at least one more player will be leaving before the loan deadline later this week…

Something else that is pretty nailed on is that pretty much 100% of the players that we currently have at PFC are on wages in excess of what we should be paying!

Back to the ‘Varney or Pearce’ thoughts anyway…

I thought Varney started the season ok, but Pearce has been fantastic throughout. Whilst quite clearly ‘goals win games’ you also have to have a solid defence and all-in-all we have had that this season.

Varney was out for several months through injury and whilst we missed him, in many ways you cannot miss what you did not have and Appy, for the most part of his time as Pompey manager, has not really had Varney’s services has he?

I think it would be a fairly safe bet to say that Varney is also on more money too…

It is pretty hard to judge a player just returning from injury but something tends to tell me that Varney is not as up for this current fight, and battle, as Pearce is so would quite happily move on if he could? (Ok maybe that is harsh, maybe not ‘quite happily’ but I would easily say ‘more willingly’.)

Like I say goals win games but Varney is hardly prolific! Granted as prolific as anyone we have, but if it were a choice between Varney and Pearce going I know who I would sooner it was to be honest.

All of this said, like I have already mentioned, the chances are at least one more player, if not a couple minimum, will be leaving this week and the chances of both Varney and Pearce being among those moving on remains a quite probable possibility…
