Varney defiant

Players have left at fairly regular intervals recently, and most of us ‘expect’ at least a couple more to go before the closure of the loan window…

Luke Varney, as he has told sky sports, ‘insists’ that he will not be the next one to depart though!

He says that he has heard ‘bits and bobs’ about an interest in him but feels that no one else needs to go as Pompey are ‘in a good position financially to get to the end of the season’ as it stands.

Helping to get Pompey ‘out of the mess we are in’ is what he says is his focus: ‘I’ve heard bits and bobs, but the gaffer made it clear that he has offloaded those that he wanted to and that we are now in a good position financially to get to the end of the season.

‘We’ve got a good group of players still here and we are all focused on ending the season strongly.

‘I’ve recently come back from a lengthy spell out through injury, so I’m hoping to stay here and play as many games as I can to help Portsmouth get out of the mess we are in.

‘On a personal note, I haven’t heard anything concrete, so I’ve not given much thought to leaving really.’

As far as his own performance goes the forward has said that he is feeling ‘the best’ he has since returning from injury and looks forward to getting ‘back to his best’ in the games to come: ‘I’ve started to hit the ball properly in training now and it is the best I’ve felt since the injury.

‘It has taken me three games to get back into the swing of things, but I guess that is understandable considering that I was out for three months out.

‘I feel that I am back to my best now and looking forward to showing that in the upcoming games.’

To be fair I thought that Varney started the season well; like I said earlier in the week it is tough to judge a player that is returning from injury though.

‘If’ he really wants to be here and ‘if’ he can score the goals to keep us up happy days! If he would sooner not be here though I would sooner he wasn’t…

By all accounts a move to Forest fell through as they just wanted him to help keep them up and then send him back to us at the end of the season – without the assurance that they would sign him, come what may, Pompey have backed out of any deal and rightly so I say!

Why should we allow a relegation rival to potentially keep a player that could help send us down only to then let them return him at the end of the summer for us to pick up the tab while they decide if they want him permanently or not.

Varney may be saying he wants to stay and his focus is on doing that but I still would not be surprised to see him leave before the loan window shuts, I just would not expect this to be to Forest…
