The spineless one handed a lifeline

‘Son of Sven’ Spineless Steve has been handed a lifeline, as have England with our Euro 2008 qualification chances.

We all hoped that Israel would do us a favour this evening but few genuinely believed that they would be able to do it, but they did and right at the death to beat Russia 2-1. Spineless Steve must have had his long spoon out last night when supping with Beelzebub…

A point against Croatia now on Wednesday and England will be going to Euro 2008, something that looked highly unlikely just a few hours ago. Sadly – and I do mean this – the Scots will not be joining us – providing we do not screw things up – as they were eliminated after a brave showing against Italy, a game they won 2-1 at the death.

It looked as though this could be the last England squad that both Sol Campbell and David James would be in, but the chances are these two will be extending their careers into one final hurrah – at least – with England on the big stage, all being well.

I have been behind James for the past 18 months for him to be the England no.1 and although it is probably not going to happen Spineless Steve can ill afford any slip-ups, so I just wish he would go for James over Paul Robinson on Wednesday as I do fear a costly error once again coming from Robinson – but that is for another day!

For now as a nation we can thank Spineless Steve for whatever ritual he might have gone through that has not only given England a lifeline but quite probably saved his job too – that in itself might not be something to be quite as thankful for however…
