The scrappy goal Cotterill wanted?

Steve Cotterill had said, well had been saying for a while, that we needed a goal to go in off someone’s backside or something…

Well, whilst Dave Kitson’s goal was not off his backside, it was a scrappy goal – but it was a goal and they all count.

So, is that the type of goal that he was talking about?

For Kitson it was his first goal in 2-months although, as he told The Pompey Site, he cannot remember much about it: ‘I wish I could talk you through the goal but I don’t remember it!

‘I remember seeing the ball hit the post at an angle that meant it was going to come back into the middle of the goal.

‘I just thought that if I got my head to it then it would go in because it was an open goal. I thought that I’d just chuck my head at it and that’s the last thing I remember. I didn’t know I’d scored until I stood up and Nugent was shouting in my ear.

‘I’m going to have to watch a video of it. It wasn’t the greatest goal ever but I just want to see my head get kicked off!

‘One tooth’s a bit wobbly. I ran my tongue round the back of my teeth to check that they were all still there and thankfully they were. I’m not the greatest looking in the world but I need my teeth!’

Joel Ward’s finish, more in line with the type of goal that Kitson has often scored over the years, was something that he did know a lot about and offered a lot of praise for.

It is a win that was needed and the travelling fans helped play a part in this, which he admits helped: ‘I don’t think there are too many people who would say we didn’t deserve it. We were strong and we took our chances as they came our way.

‘First and foremost as the away team you need hard work – and we had that in spades.

‘The fans definitely helped. They were unbelievable – I’ve never seen anything like it. They were singing from start to finish.’

Kitson needed a goal and we needed a win.

With him getting that goal, and us getting that win, can it kick-start all into a better run?

Time will tell, but it is also something that we could do with so fingers crossed…
