Welcome to the Pompey Chimes – the definitive guide to the past week in the world of Pompey. The Chimes has had a short summer break, but is now back for the new season.

Club News

Well not a great start for Pompey this season, with two games played and no points or goals on the board. Read all about how Pompey went down by a freak goal against Fulham here, and also how unlucky they were against Birmingham here.

Fulham Stats: here.
Birmingham Stats: here.

(I have a feeling I’m going to be writing the word ‘defeat’ a heckovalot this season!)

The reserves have to wait until August 26th for their opening fixture against Wolves at 7.00pm at AFC Telford’s ground, the New Bucks Head.

The nippers finished their pre-season with a winner by taking all three points from West Bromwich Albion last week as they beat the Baggies 3-2. See the official site for the match report.

So the future of Fratton Park is still in doubt, but one thing for certain is that Dr SAF is playing some kind of role at the club. He was present at the Fulham game, much to the relief of thousands, and you can read about that here. That said, The Mirror still managed to put some negative spin on this, and you can read about that by clicking here.

Rumours also arose this week that in fact Peter Storrie is heading a consortium to purchase the club off the current owner (Dr SAF I think), and you can read about that here. More information can also be found here. The official position can be found here.

Either way, Hart thinks it’ll happen soon, and so you can read about his thoughts here.

Jim4Pompey rightly points out that all this background nonsense around the club is affecting the first team in that adding players is becoming more difficult, and you can read his take on things here.

Squad News

More positive news as Kanu reveals he will stay at the club.

I for one am ABSOLUTELY FUMING at a certain person who has a son called Jamie, a daughter-in-law called Louise, and a very wobbly face. The King of Twitch promised not to rape Portsmouth for players, but has signed Defoe and Crouch whilst attempting to sign others. He is now trying YET AGAIN, by announcing his admiration for David James here. He was still at it again later in the week and you can read about that here.

Pompey have been linked with Danny Shittu and Gavin McCann in recent weeks, players that are below average at best. So it’s just as well that McCann at least has spoken about not wanting to move to the South Coast, and you can read about that here.

One player that may well join, as he has expressed an interest, is Aruna Dindane. Get the deal done is the message, and you can read it here.

Gino’s Fact of the Week

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famed for his books about Sherlock Holmes, played for “Portsmouth Amateur Football Association” in 1894, four years before Portsmouth FC as we know it today was officially formed. Therefore technically, saying he was Portsmouth’s first goalkeeper is incorrect!!

Gino’s Teaser

Can anyone name the first player to be sent off in The Premiership, and why?
