As The News puts it today, Pompey – via what Peter Storrie told them – have issued a ‘hands off’ warning over Sylvain Distin: ‘we want Sylvain to remain at this football club and will be making sure he does.

‘We have only ever had one offer for him and I am not at liberty to say who from. But we told them we were not interested under any circumstances.

‘At this moment in time, as far as we are concerned, Sylvain is staying. It’s as simple as that.’

To be honest the Frenchman has not been my favourite people recently, but we really cannot afford to lose both Distin and Sol!

We just have to hope that, if he does stay – by that I mean we do decide that we really do not want to sell him – that he knuckles down and does his talking on the pitch and not off it. I am not convinced he is the man for it but ‘maybe’ offering him the captains armband could be a sweetener…

As for Peter Crouch it was confirmed that he will be sold, for ‘footballing reasons’ because an ‘exceptional money’ offer has been made: ‘Peter will not be staying. I’m aware of the Sunderland situation but there are other clubs in for him.

‘With him it is a club decision to sell. It’s like anything if exceptional money is offered you look at it and that is the instance in this case. Sulaiman has been aware of that so there is no problem there.’

If selling Crouch is in the best interests of the club then this is something we have to support and back – again, as with so many, and most things, we cannot alter what will happen, we just accept this, draw a line under it and move on.

We must bring in some quality though, that goes without saying…

I must admit I have been unsure about doing this but Benjani may well prove exactly what we need, and picking up Citeh casts offs, for example, might not be a bad way to go – survival this season is a must!
