Despite Pompey denying an interest in Marcelo Mattos the Brazilians agent, or ‘representative’ as he is described, a certain Pini Zahavi claims that a bid from Pompey is being ‘considered’.

A clause in his contract allows him to leave Panathinaikos for £5.9m and an offer has been made by Pompey according to Zahavi, who told Greek paper Goal: ‘at this moment we are considering offers from English clubs, one is from Portsmouth and two more.’

He also went on to say that although he could move on this summer he may well stay in Greece: ‘but it is possible for Mattos to stay at Panathinaikos, the player is very happy with the working conditions there and he loves the fans.

‘He is also very satisfied with the attitude of the people at the club, we will have to wait a few weeks as the transfer market does not officially open until July.’

Issues gaining a work permit should not be a problem, as he will become a European citizen at the end of the month, picking up an Italian passport.

Agents, or ‘representatives’ say a lot of things don’t they and not all of them are necessarily true – we will just have to wait and see with this one…
