Reflecting on Coventry win

The latest turbulent week in the history of Portsmouth Football Club at least ended on a high note with us picking up a home win over Coventry.

A 4th win in 5 at Fortress Fratton in fact as we extended that unbeaten home run to 5.

Appy knows how ‘important’ this win was and is also happy with the way we have responded to his first game defeat at Watford: ‘it was a crucial win for us – we’re now starting to look up the table rather than down.

‘I’m delighted for the players because they’ve worked so hard in the last fortnight since we lost at Watford. This was a reward for them.’

The 2-1 win was a win that we deserved although it SHOULD have been a lot more comfortable than the scoreline showed as defensively Coventry were all over the place with enough ‘clear cut chances’ created that we should have taken more of!

‘Creating chances’, like we did, pleased Appy but he knows we have to take more: ‘but I’ve told them we should have won more comfortably. We had lots of chances to score and if you don’t take them then there is every likelihood that you will let the opposition back into the game.

‘When openings come our way we need to be quicker to take them because if you do that it doesn’t give the defender time to get back and make a difference.

‘Having said that I’m really pleased with the number of chances we created and the way we played.’

Given the ‘possibility’ that we could, at some point in the months ahead, be hit with a points penalty – should we be forced into admin again down the line – the more points we can get in the meantime the better and our home form will be key to collecting points!

Coventry, with all due respect, are a side that we should be beating at home so as much as it was not pretty (for large periods) it got the job done and at least gives us something to smile about again after another disappointing week in the history of PFC.

One thing that I do know is that we must take our chances against Burnley next weekend, should we create as many, as they will not be as forgiving as The Sky Blues, then again nor will Scum the weekend after…
