What can you say?
Given the fighting spirit shown by the players on the pitch at Bloomfield Road and the out of this world showing of support from the fans in the stands the outcome of the game with Blackpool was almost irrelevant in many ways!
Almost irrelevant mind! Although as it happens we ended up coming away with a point in the 1-1 draw, the VERY least that we deserved…
Appy knows that but for a more ‘clinical’ Pompey when attacking we would have, and probably should have, been out of sight by the time Blackpool finally did get their equaliser.
The ‘crucial’ second goal just could not be found though, yet he still had time to praise the quality of Blackpool’s equaliser: ‘for as much pressure as they produced in the second half, I thought we should have gone at least 2-0 up instead of allowing them back in for the equaliser. We just weren’t clinical enough.
‘When you come to a place like Blackpool, where they have a very good record of coming from behind, it’s crucial to get the second goal.
‘Erik took his goal well in the first half but after the break he didn’t take the chances he had to give us that bit of breathing space.
‘I was a little bit disappointed with the free-kick leading up to their equaliser. But what I can’t argue with is the technique from the free-kick by Crainey.’
When the Blackpool equaliser did come many could have been forgiven for thinking that we would ‘cave in’ and let them go onto win!
That did not happen though and in the grand scheme of things Appy appreciates what an important point this might prove to be come the end of the season: ‘after that equaliser it would have been quite easy for the lads to have caved in, but I was delighted with the way they reacted.
‘We stood firm and it could prove to be a crucial point come the end of the season.’
What of the support?
Appy was totally blown away by it!
He says that he had ‘never seen anything like that’ in terms of support: ‘I’ve never seen anything like that.
‘To travel the distance they have to support the boys in the way they did just shows how much they are behind the club and the desire there is to keep this club in a good place.
‘At times it felt like we were the home team the support was so loud.’
Pompey and proud, I think that best sums up how I – and I dare say each and everyone of us – are feeling at this point in time…
